This coalition is a result of the ALIANZAS Program, a Central American initiative promoted by the IUCN (World Union for Conservation of Nature) and the government of Norway, in which took part more than 200 organizations and institutions from five Central American countries (Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala).

During the implementation of this program, six alliances were created in three transboundary regions of these countries, one of them Alianza Bocas, in Bocas del Toro, with its counterpart in Talamanca, Costa Rica.

However, in our case, there was a precedent which has been ADESBO, the Alliance for the Sustainable Development of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, with which, recently, Alianza Bocas has merged.

The founding members of ALIANZA BOCAS are: ADESBO, National Environmental Authority (ANAM), Cooperativa Solary, Fundación PROMAR, Panamá Verde, ADEPESCO, ODESEN, AMIPETAB, Fundación NATURA, OCADEIC, CODANG and ASAFRI.
